Chapter 13 - Series 7510 - Giant Runt

Giant Runt - Natural Scale (7519R)($250-$300)

Listed as 'new' in the 1939 Heddon catalog, the Giant Runt apparently was so new, no artwork had been done so it wasn't pictured. The Giant Runt was a wood lure that was very similiar to the Great-Vamp, #7540, except it was about 1/2 the length, measuring in at 3-1/4". It weighed 1-1/10 ounces, came with a bucktail rear treble and was a floating lure that dived when reeled in. The large front diving blade most likely caused a wide side-to-side wobbling action.

Reinforced Hardware

This illustration taken from the 1940 Heddon catalog shows how the hardware was reinforced to handle the larger fish the lure was intended for, i.e., Muskies, Northern Pike and Salmon. In the case of the line tie, a pin was used and run partially through the width of the lure beginning at the edge of the mouth. The rear treble hook hanger was held by the addition of a screw on the side of the lure and a specially designed metal blade that was inserted into the body of the lure. The screw ran through a hole in the metal blade. Additionally, extra long screws were used to hold the belly treble hardware. Another version of this lure has this screw in the bottom of the lure rather than in the side.

Though initially called a "Giant Runt", the name was changed to "Giant River-Runt" in the 1940 and 1941 catalogs though that name change was never printed on the lure itself. It was last listed in the 1941 so had a short production run of only 3 years.
